Instruction on programming



  1. Introduction.

The program is intended for programming emergency EPIRBs MP-406.

The basic requirements: OS Windows 95/98/Me/2000/NT/XP.

To open program Be Pro V5.1.

  1. Connection of Programmator.

Before the beginning of work connect Programmator to CATFISH - PORT of a computer. You can set up communication port, to which Programmator is connected (СОМ1 ÷ СОМ4) to do that it is necessary to choose necessary value from dropping out list PORT, and also to choose speed of data transmission using dropping out list RATE (BAVD) (1200 bps is recommended).

  1. Data input.

EPIRB can be programmed by the following protocols:

-           Maritime User Protocol with MMSI;

-           EPIRB Serial Identification;

-           Maritime User protocol with Radio Call Sign;

-           Radio Call Sign User Protocol with Radio Call Sign.

The protocol type is chosen using the dropping out list Protocol TYPE.

When you choose the protocol you will see automatically filled in obligatory fields designed for data input.

Optional fields for information input (if the information is not entered into the given fields those corresponding fields will be empty at the print-out of the protocol):

-          Information about the company carrying out programming of the given EPIRB.

-           Information about an vessel and the owner.

3.1. Obligatory fields for information input:

             - Test Protocol

             → Yes

             → No

            If you choose Yes, EPIRB will be programmed by a test sending.


3.2.  Countrycode.

To enter a code of the country where the vessel is registered.



To choose EPIRB model (МР-406)


3.4. Manufacturer serial No

To enter serial number EPIRB


3.5. Protocol TYPE

To choose the user protocol type.

If the protocol has MMSI code, enter the data in the window “MMSI 6 digits”. If the protocol doesn’t have MMSI, fill in the program windows with corresponding values.


3.6. Beacon Number on vessel

To enter EPIRB serial number on a vessel.


 4. Generation of a sending

When you input all necessary data, press the button “Generate message”.

In the right part of the program there will appear the information that will be recorded in EPIRB.


5. Programming EPIRB

Place Programmator LED on the EPIRB cap above PRG LED.

Switch EPIRB in mode "Test" and in 3-5 seconds press the button “ Send Message ” (or Enter).

On screen PC there is a filling field with red color of 100 %, and on EPIRB 1 time light beacon (two bright light-emitting diodes) should flash, and then to light up a light-emitting diode <406/121> in the beginning red, and then green color. It means programming has passed successfully.

If time of programming (3-5 seconds) is passed, on EPIRB triple flash light a beacon (two bright light-emitting diodes) is observed. Process of programming is necessary for repeating, observing time of programming.


To print out the protocol choose "File" → "Printer" in the menu.




II. Explanation:

1) Note that when you press the button “Send message” and a red line 100% appears on the PC screen that doesn’t mean that EPIRB has been programmed. That red line means that PC information has been sent.


EPIRB is programmed only when 2 LEDs brightly flash once and at the same time red line 100% appears on PC screen.


2) When the process is successful there is a red line on PC and one flash of two LEDs on EPIRB.

  EPIRB information is to be checked for correctness. To do that switch EPIRB in test mode  and in 7-8 seconds two bright LEDs are to flash 3 times. That means that BCH code  is OK. Using BCH code you can check information recorded in EPIRB that EPIRB processor produces.


3) The final test of recorded in EPIRB information is done by EPIRB testers.

  EPIRB Tester receives a signal from EPIRB, decodes it and shows on its screen or PC screen as it was shown in item I.11.

  That is the way EPIRB is tested by service centers and " Port state control ".
